A festival to be organized across 21 districts in Assam from 31st March to 4th April 2017Namami


Brahmaputra, which means “Obeisance to the Brahmaputra”, will showcase the beauty and glory of the mighty river and the land it flows through. It will also help to highlight Assam’s potential in the global platform, bringing economic opportunities and developmentAccording to Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, Honourable Chief Minister of Assam, “Brahmaputra is our culture, civilization, economy and lifeline.” The festival will promote the Brahmaputra as a tourist attraction. Namami Brahmaputra will promote it in a bigger way. There are more than 2,300 islands in the river and visitors will have the unique experience of seeing them first-hand.

From the Ahom capital in Sibsagar to the tea gardens on the valley of its meandering path, to the Satras in Majuli and to the cultural and religious amalgamation at Hajo, the Brahmaputra has so much of richness to offer. The Brahmaputra is intrinsic to the socio-cultural life in Assam. The river ferries passengers across and operates luxury cruises between Guwahati and Kaziranga apart from transporting cargos to towns and cities on its bank.

Namami Brahmaputra Festival gives people from rest of India and outside the opportunity to absorb the very rich tradition of Assam founded on the strength this mighty river. The river along with its tributaries, offers immense scope for adventure sport and recreation. Tributaries like Manas, Jia Bhoreli and Kopili have some fiery rapids that make them ideal for white water rafting.

The Brahmaputra river system is home to around 300 individuals of highly endangered river dolphin, locally known as the “Xihu”. The festival will focus on the importance of protecting the species to maintain ecological balance.
