Father's Day History
Father's Day is celebrated
worldwide to recognize the contribution that fathers make to their children. It
is celebrates fatherhood and male parenting. Although it is celebrated on a
variety of dates worldwide, many countries including India observe this day on
the third Sunday in June. This year it is celebrating its 100th anniversary on
June 19.
On June 19, 1910, a Father's Day
celebration was held at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd.
Her father, the civil war veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent
who raised his six children there. She came up with the idea of honoring and
celebrating her father while listening to a Mother's Day sermon at church in
1909.
